Buying Summer Concert Tickets Can be Dangerous

By Christina Patten, Business Operations Analyst at PacketSled

Recently, the personal data for tens of thousands of people was exposed due to a data security breach at Ticketmaster UK (see full story here). “Forensic teams and security experts are working around the clock to understand how the data was compromised,” said Ticketmaster. “We are working with relevant authorities, as well as credit card companies and banks.”

Ticketmaster found malware within a customer chat function on its website which was hosted by a third-party provider. Malicious codes were enabling access to personal information including names, addresses, emails, telephone numbers, payment details and passwords that many of those customers probably also use on other digital platforms. Tickets to concerts and events occur by the hundreds every week around the world and there is a massive volume of private information that is vulnerable to hackers on such platforms.

Apparently, the breach went undetected for months and Ticketmaster did not alert customers until weeks after the fact. Customers who purchased, or attempted to purchase, tickets between September 2017 and June 23, 2018 were affected, which totaled over 40,000 people. How did this go undetected and unreported for so long?

For one thing, there was likely a lack of Network Visibility, which hampered Ticketmaster and the third-party provider’s ability to see the incident as it occurred and to contain it. Sadly, we read about such occurrences daily and security teams globally are understaffed and underfunded. At PacketSled, we partner with organizations and enterprises to deliver full network monitoring and network visibility, so you know what is happening in terms of both north-south and east-west traffic. By adding PacketSled to your program, your understaffed team can monitor and track incidents in far less time. Read how PacketSled helps to keep the City of San Diego safe.

PacketSled was designed to help organizations detect and identify potential threats to global networks in real-time. With the PacketSled platform, customers gain total Network Visibility and clarity into activities they didn’t even realize were happening on their network. Having these invaluable tools in-place along with other safeguards available through your standard SIEM, make it far less likely for a catastrophic breach to occur. PacketSled empowers your security team to rapidly identify threats and mitigate risk.
